When you hear of the city of Las Vegas, the thoughts which would immediately enter your head are the bright neon city lights, the exciting casino games, and the luxurious resorts and hotels. Las Vegas offers entertainment at its best, and anyone who wants to splurge money and have a glorious time should visit this city. But just because its dubbed as the “Entertainment Capital of the World” does not mean that Las Vegas does not offer education to its young citizens. There are in fact, several colleges and universities which are located around this fabulous city, where eager students can get their much-deserved educational prowess.
Although there are several universities within the state of Nevada, and numerous educational facilities surrounding Las Vegas, there's only one university which is located exactly within the Vegas territory. This is the UNLV or the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. UNLV is located in the southeastern area of the city, on Maryland Parkway. It has a campus which covers 337 acres of land, and which is 2 ½ kilometers away from the infamous Las Vegas Strip.
Just like other universities, the UNLV has a long history, dating back to 1951. This university first started out only as a dusty outpost on the edge of the town. When the University of Nevada, Reno (UNR) observed the sudden boom in the Las Vegas population, they decided to create an extension program to this area. It was a shaky and humble start. The first 28 students only held classes within the in the Las Vegas high school campus' auditorium dressing rooms. In 1954, the extension program adopted the name “Nevada Southern”. But then, the campus officials began to express their desire to break free from the UNR. Finally, after settling in an area in the Maryland Parkway area, the larger, newly-constructed Nevada Southern campus conducted its first classes in September 10, 1957.
Today, UNLV has over 28,000 students and boasts of innovative campus facilities. The university is known for its degree programs for Environmental Studies, Hotel Administration, History, Management Information Systems and Engineering.
